Home Staging Business
If you like meeting people, have a design flair and enjoy decorating, then a home staging business could be for you.
Home staging is the process of redecorating a house prior to sale, to ensure it appeals to largest cross section of buyers and gets the highest possible price.
Entrepreneur Magazine has rated this as one of the hot opportunities for the year, and with exposure on HGTV’s Designed To Sell and A&E’s sell this house, the general market is more receptive to home staging proposals.
Home staging is becoming big business, as sellers, especially in a tight market look for every opportunity to maximize the sale price of their home.
If you have a flair for design and a love of real estate this could develop into a profitable business for you.
By setting up as a home based business your start-up costs could be minimal say $500 to $1000 for an office in your home, plus marketing materials.
Hourly rates in the order of $80 – $100 per hour are achievable, with $1000 per job a realistic expectation.
There is also the opportunity to sell other services. Since much of the work involves de-cluttering a home and creating market pleasing effects, there is the opportunity to also charge for junk-hauling, color consultations, move arranging etc.

The only problem with this business option right now is the slowness the real estate market is facing today. It is a serious factor to consider before jumping into the bandwagon of home staging business. – Javier.
Looks like that will be a job area in decline now that the bubble has burst. It was a very profitable gig for the past few years, but looks like it will become much more niche now.

I am considering the home stage biz as anew career. I would like to hear from current home stagers about how to get started.
Home Staging, also known as House Fluffing, is a growing trend, and a must in today’s market. Realtors are not going to spend the neccessary time with homeowners regarding paint colors, decluttering, and all other aspects of preparing a home for sale. This is where a home stager’s skills come into play, to create a welcoming environment to attract the most potential buyers to sell fast and for more money. It’s a great business, if you know how to market it right. I own my own home staging business (www.designcontours.com) and I can tell you that the start up costs are much lower than other businesses. To answer your question, it’ll help to get certified in Home Staging. I went to QC Design school where I earned my IRSP certificate. They’ll help you every step of the way, even after you’ve finished their courses. With their guidance, and some persistant marketing from you, your business can only fly if you put the time and effort into it. Good Luck!
