Social Bookmarking Demographics
This post is about the social bookmarking demographics reported in the Royal Pingdom Blog.
Selling stuff, any stuff, is a lot more effective if you know something about the people you are selling to and can tailor your message to them. This holds true irrespective of whether your revenue is coming from online or offline sales.
Online marketers, looking to leverage traffic from social bookmarking sites, will be interested in a new survey completed by the Pingdom people, which provides an insight into the male to female ratios of visitors to those sites.
The quick statistics make interesting reading:
- The average ratio of all 19 sites was 47% male, 53% female.
- If they hadn’t included the three social news sites, all of the sites would have had more females than males.
- 84% (16 out of 19) of the sites have more female than male users.
- The social news sites Digg, Reddit and Slashdot have significantly more male users than female. The standout here is Slashdot which has 82% male users.
- Twitter and Facebook have almost the same male-female ratio; Twitter with 59% female users and Facebook with 57%.
- The most female-dominated site? Bebo (66% female users), closely followed by MySpace and Classmates.com (64%).
The full list of sites included in the study was:
Facebook, LinkedIn, MySpace, Twitter, Slashdot, Reddit, Digg, Delicious, StumbleUpon, FriendFeed, Last.fm, Friendster, LiveJournal, Hi5, Imeem, Ning, Xanga, Classmates.com, Bebo and the study drew data from Google’s Ad Planner service.
The original article includes a nice graph of the results.

I’m not surprised at all .. my website traffic that coming from Facebook & MySpace mostly are females. but I didn’t thought it’s across the board. thanks for sharing.
I have to say I had never even thought about the stats of male v female visitors before now, as you say it is much more effective if you know the target market.
I think this will be a great help and now I have to change all my sites :-)
Thank you for the info,
James Howard
Digg, Reddit, and Slashdot should never be abused for business purposes. They’re not even worth your time unless your site is actually a standout.
Great information. I would never have thought about the gender of traffic from these sites – just the overall traffic. It really does pay to know your customer and tailor your message to them.
Very interesting stats.
I could see why twitter and facebook are somewhat equal in terms of male and female balance.
Thank you very much for sharing
i’ll be stumbling this :-)
i think only twitter, myspace and facebook useful for business purpose
Judging by my girlfriends net usage – The figures don’t lie :)
Well researched data. It is very useful to those who are planning to submit their pages into a social Bookmarking sites. Now, it is not only the PR that marketers would look into but also for the ratio of male and female users.
I’m really surprised. I would have guessed that men would dominate Facebook and Twitter.
Thanks for the info. This is great knowledge especially since Google and Bing will be including social networking site listings on the first page.
Interesting graph. I can totally believe the figures though seeing that women are more chatty than men anyways for the most part.
I think most of girls like facebook because of the useless applications on it like quiz, hearts, kiss etc.
Male or Female is not a matter. The main thing is how much traffic we get.
As I use Twitter and Facebook for Internet Marketing, most of my followers and the people I am following are male. I didn’t think about much about twitter/facebook users outside my area.
Most Internet Marketers are male, but a larger group of women are making it in this world. Its the best thing for the business.
This is very true. Maybe this is due to the fact that females really love chatting with friends than males and also females are more homebound than males which make them spend more time in the internet.
My Site Traffic is very poor from Social networking sites …even i have bookmarked in almost all sites …i dont know how to improve the traffic ..i personally feel that there is no users for my product in social networking sites
Base on this demographic I can now focus on which Bookmarking site I’ll submit my gender related site’s and not waste time figuring things out. although I will accept any traffic whether is from a male or female visitor.
I never cared at all till I started a site based almost 100% for women, now I think ill join Bebo, LOL

As a man myself I have to fight the urge to write for other men. Even in my internet marketing niche 40% of my students are females. It is not suprising they are more active is social media
Facebook is the ideal social media site for online marketing because you can have ad campaigns by targeting your customers gender, location, and any other preferences.
For example: If your target customers are male and located in the USA, ads will only show to male users who is located in USA.
I remember even 5 years ago there were way more men than women on most forums, but things are changing indeed.
